Types and Features of Tray Dryers

Tray Dryers are used for drying in conventional processes and deliver excellent results. It is constructed as a double-walled cabinet having one or two doors. High-density fiberglass wool insulating material is filled between the two walls to prevent heat transfer. The doors are provided with gaskets, and the stainless steel trays are placed on movable trolleys.

Air circulation is provided by dynamically placed axial flow blower fans inside the drying chamber. The control panel includes a process timer, digital temperature controller, indicator lamps, etc. (A circular chart recorder can be provided at an additional cost upon request.)

Air Circulation

Drying powders, granules, and raw materials in various industries.
A tray dryer consists of an insulated enclosure fitted with multiple horizontal trays on which material is spread in a thin layer for drying. Heated air, generated by electric heaters or steam coils, is circulated by fans across or through the material on the trays. Tray dryers are batch-operated units, meaning material is loaded onto trays, the dryer runs for a predetermined cycle, and the dried product is unloaded manually or mechanically before the next batch begins.
Optimal material loading depth on trays typically ranges from 10 mm to 50 mm depending on the material's drying rate, particle size, and airflow direction. Deeper loading slows drying and can lead to moisture stratification (dryer on top, wetter at the bottom). Shallow loading with high air velocity provides faster and more uniform drying but reduces the total batch capacity. Periodic manual raking of trays during the drying cycle can significantly improve uniformity for deeper beds.
Pharmaceutical tray dryers are used for drying wet granules (after high-shear or fluid-bed granulation), drying active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), drying coated tablets and pellets during stability testing, drying botanical extracts, and drying laboratory-scale batches during formulation development. GMP-compliant tray dryers with validated temperature uniformity across all shelf positions are a standard requirement in pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities.
Temperature uniformity is validated using temperature mapping studies in which calibrated thermocouple sensors are placed at multiple positions (typically 9–15 points) across the loaded tray chamber, at both top and bottom tray positions. The mapping is performed at the intended operating temperature with and without product load. Acceptance criteria typically require all measured temperatures to be within ±2°C of setpoint throughout the drying cycle, with documented evidence for regulatory submissions.
Standard industrial tray dryers are available in configurations of 24, 48, 96, and 192 trays, often arranged on moveable trolleys for easy loading using fork trucks. Tray dimensions are typically standardized (600 × 400 mm or 700 × 450 mm) to allow interchangeability across multiple dryer units in the same facility. Custom configurations with up to 300+ trays on multiple trolleys are available from specialized manufacturers for very large-scale operations.
