Introduction

Kerone’s Spray & Fluid Bed Combination Dryer converts liquid feeds such as solutions, emulsions and suspensions into free-flowing, agglomerated powders in one continuous, integrated process. In the first stage, the liquid is atomised into fine droplets inside a hot-air drying chamber, where most of the water evaporates within seconds. The partially dried particles, which still contain a few percent of residual moisture, then fall into an integrated or external fluid bed where they are gently fluidised, agglomerated, finish-dried and cooled. Because the particles are not forced to reach final dryness in the spray chamber, the process can run at lower outlet temperatures, reduce thermal stress and produce larger, more porous granules with excellent flowability and instant dispersibility. This combined approach is the technology behind many instant milk, infant formula, beverage, flavour and detergent powders, and Kerone builds it as a complete, hygienic and energy-conscious drying line.

Why Choose Kerone Spray & Fluid Bed Combination Dryer

Powder quality is rarely determined by moisture alone; bulk density, particle size, wettability, solubility and dust level all influence how your customer experiences the product. Kerone designs each Spray & Fluid Bed Combination Dryer around those target properties. The atomiser, whether a pressure nozzle or a rotary wheel, is selected for the required droplet size distribution, and the chamber geometry and air pattern are set to control wall deposition and residence time. The fluid bed section is engineered for stable fluidisation, fines return and cooling, so that agglomeration is controlled rather than accidental. Because combustible powders can present dust-explosion hazards, Kerone considers explosion venting, suppression or isolation, and the relevant safety standards at design stage. Hygienic finishes, clean-in-place provisions for food and dairy duties, and heat recovery from exhaust air help to protect both product quality and operating cost. Trial runs on pilot spray dryers help confirm formulation behaviour before full-scale commitment.

Types and Features of Spray & Fluid Bed Combination Dryer

Kerone offers two main arrangements. In the integrated fluid bed design, a static fluid bed is built into the base of the spray chamber, allowing a compact layout and fines recirculation directly into the atomising zone. In the external fluid bed design, a vibrating or static fluidiser is installed after the spray chamber, giving more flexibility for multi-stage drying, cooling and agglomeration. Atomisation may use high-pressure nozzles for coarser, denser powders or rotary atomisers for high-capacity operation, and airflow can be co-current, counter-current or mixed-flow depending on heat sensitivity. Additional features include cyclone and bag-filter powder recovery, fines-return systems, binder or coating spray lances, multi-stage inlet air heating, indirect or direct heaters, CIP-ready surfaces, and PLC automation with continuous monitoring of inlet and outlet temperatures, bed temperature and differential pressure.

Key Features

  • Two-stage drying: Spray drying removes bulk moisture rapidly, while the fluid bed completes drying at gentler conditions.
  • Agglomerated, instant powders: Controlled agglomeration creates larger, porous particles that dissolve and disperse easily in water.
  • Lower outlet temperatures: Finishing drying in the fluid bed reduces thermal damage to flavours, proteins and active ingredients.
  • Improved flowability and reduced dust: larger granules handle, dose and pack better than fine spray-dried powder.
  • Fines recirculation: Captured fines are returned to the chamber or bed to improve yield and build granule structure.
  • Flexible atomisation options: Pressure nozzles or rotary atomisers can be chosen to control droplet size and capacity.
  • Safety-oriented design: Explosion-protection measures, temperature interlocks and pressure monitoring address combustible powder risks.
  • Hygienic operation: Polished stainless steel, CIP provisions and sanitary filtration suit food, dairy and nutrition production.

Applications of Spray & Fluid Bed Combination Dryer

Kerone’s Spray & Fluid Bed Combination Dryers are extensively used in industries that need powders with defined particle structure and rapid dissolution. Typical applications include:
    • Manufacturing whole milk powder, skim milk powder, whey protein and infant formula base powders.
    • Producing instant coffee, tea extracts, cocoa beverage mixes and other soluble drink powders.
    • Drying flavours, fruit juice concentrates, plant extracts and encapsulated nutritional ingredients.
    • Making detergent, surfactant and specialty chemical granules with controlled density.
    • Producing agglomerated probiotic and vitamin premixes with improved handling properties.
    • Processing ceramic slurries and catalyst or pigment suspensions into granulated powders.
Kerone’s Spray & Fluid Bed Combination Dryer is a proven route to powders that are not only dry, but also free-flowing, dust-reduced and quick to dissolve. By dividing the work between a spray chamber and a fluid bed, the system lowers thermal stress, improves granule structure and gives processors a wider window for tailoring bulk density and particle size. With robust safety design, hygienic construction and efficient heat use, it supports demanding food, nutrition, chemical and specialty applications. Contact Kerone with your feed composition, solids content and target powder specifications, and we will propose a configuration, capacity and trial plan suited to your product.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • Drying to final moisture inside the chamber requires higher outlet temperatures, which can damage heat-sensitive components and increase sticking. Leaving some moisture for the fluid bed allows gentler drying, agglomeration and cooling.
