The flash dryer stage disperses the feed into a high-velocity stream of hot gas, where surface moisture is removed within seconds as the particles are carried through a drying duct. The rotary drum then provides additional residence time, typically from several minutes upward, allowing internal or bound moisture to migrate out as the material tumbles through a heated gas stream. Using the flash section first breaks up lumps, increases surface area and removes the bulk of the moisture quickly, so the rotary drum can be smaller and run more stably than if it had to dry the raw feed alone.
