Heating Mantles have been designed to heat the flask containing samples which are organic liquids which can burst into flames on contact with direct flames or heat or release flammable vapours which are heavier then air and can explodes on contact with open flames or heating coils. Heating Mantles have enclosed heating space to minimise such threats. They are available in fabric or rigid construction. Fabric mantles are flexible to accommodate a range of sample flasks having different shape and size. The rigid mantle on the other hand are designed for specific size or has size large enough which can be filled with sand to accommodate flasks of various size. The sand also provides uniform heating to the samples.
The fabric mantle is cheaper then rigid mantle but is prone to damage from spilled liquids. The hot or corrosive liquid can tear or damage the fabric exposing the wiring beneath exposing it to fire hazards.
The Heating Mantles use AC voltage to heat the sample. The heating mantles should never be plugged directly to wall socket, instead a transformer, electronic relay or switch should be used between heating mantle and the wall socket. This precaution is necessary because intense energy is drawn to generate high degree of heat which can blow the fuse or melt the socket wiring.
The Heating Mantles are available in different configuration. They are either available as one unit comprising of the mantle and integral controller device or as two separate units i.e. the mantle and the controlling device sold together. Mantle is not the temperature controller.
